Mindfulness for Mental Illness Among Teens

Anxiety is the leading mental illness in adolescents, with depression following as the second. Survey trends in the U.S. show a rapid increase in these diagnosis in the past 10 to 20 years.

Mindfulness has taken a leap in popularity in the last several decades, being integrated into health practices and gaining research based on scientific investigations. Research suggests mindfulness is a preferable resource for coping with mild to moderate anxiety and depression.

My Research

Read about my findings 0n teenage depression and anxiety, how teens today are receiving treatment, and what has been done to help those who need it.

  • Anxiety affects 18.1% of the U.S. population annually (“Facts & Statistics”)

  • Depression accounts for 10% of all medical disability in the U.S. (NIMH)

  • 1 in 3 teens ages 13-18 in the U.S. will develop an anxiety disorder. The National Institutes of Health have said these numbers have increased by 20% between 2007 and 2012 (McCarthy).
